Steph, the pioneer minister, launched a Cafe Soulspace as pilot in September 2025. Nearly everyone from the well-established cafe comes, an average of about 20 people a week.
At first about half of these were were not regularly attending church, but that proportion dropped to about a third by December, reflecting the changing balance of those at the cafe. They plan to do more in the New Year to attract people with little church background.
Hylda, Kath and others have joined Steph in leading Soulspace, and Steph led an informal workshop in her kitchen for others who would like to do so.
Focus with the candle, Bible study using ‘I wonder type questions’, and prayer with conversational space have worked well.
One man had a spiritual encounter at Soulspace and has started coming to church, while one-to-one faith conversations have begun to happen at the end of Soulspace.
The church also has a samba drumming group led by the musical director. At the start of November 2025 they began using Soulspace at the end. About half the group stay behind, of whom over two thirds don’t go to church. The group tends to be more contemplative than the cafe Soulspace.
